Software that support 64-bit and benefits of it Windows Vista x64

Avast! antivirus v4.7

All avast! antivirus editions, including the free Home Edition, now support the new Windows Vista platform (both 32-bit and 64-bit builds).

Paint.net.png

Paint.net

Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

64-bit Support Since version 2.6, Paint.NET has had full, native support for 64-bit processors. Benefits of 64-bit mode include better performance and the ability to work with larger or more images. This support requires that you have both a 64-bit capable processor and a 64-bit operating system installed. An example would be an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

You do not need to perform any additional configuration steps to enable 64-bit mode: as long as both your processor and operating system are 64-bit capable, Paint.NET will run in 64-bit mode.

VAG-COM

Diagnostic Software for VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda. Works fine on vista, it has 64 bit drivers. When installing use the program default folder C:\NEtech instead of C:\Program Files, this is because VAG-COM saves data in it's installation folder and that is not supported by Vista.

DAEMON Tools v4.09.1 X64 64 Bits (with SPTD 1.43)

Remember to unselect the DAEMON Tools Search Bar, this is AdWare as described on teir download page.

Wireshark

Wireshark.png

Wireshark is the world's foremost network protocol analyzer.

It runs fine under Vista x86.

During the installation of WinPcap you are asked if you want to Start WinPcap service "NPF" at startup - so users without administrative privileges can capture. Default is not to start NPF at startup.

If you dont start NPF at startup Wireshark needs to run as administretor to start it.

  • If you run Wireshark as administrator there is a risk that every possible Wireshark exploit will be running with the administrator account being able to compromise the whole system.
  • If you start NPF at startup ,any program can capture network taffic, also spyware.

The most secure is to start the driver by hand ever time you use it, but that is inconvinient.

I prefer to run Wireshark as administrator.

You can read more about capture privileges here:

JkDefrag

Free (released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimize utility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with several optimization strategies, and can handle floppies and USB disks/sticks.

Software that works OK under Windows Vista x64

SJPhone

SJphone is a free VOIP softphone from SJ Labs. It works perfect under Vista x64 but I had to disable Adaptive Echo Canceller. I guess it is caused by my soundboard (Dell D620) and not Vixta x64.

Read more about this here: Voice over IP - SJphone

WinZip 11.0

WinZip 11.1 suppports Vista Support for 64-bit Windows Vista and XP as well as 32-bit Windows Vista, XP, and 2000

CPU-Z

CPU-Z is a freeware that gathers a lot of information on some of the main devices of your system. This program is very usefull if you want to buy more memory. It can show the frequency and timings of your memory module(s) and the specification using SPD (Serial Presence Detect) : vendor, serial number, timings table.

IE7Pro

IE7Pro is a must have add-on for Internet Explorer, which includes a lot of features and tweaks to make your IE friendlier, more useful, secure and customizable. It only exists in a 32 bit version, but the default Internet Explorer on Vista x64 is 32 bit because a lot off other stuff like Adobe Flash player also only exist in 32 bit versions.

SQL Server 2005

Visual Studio

Visual Basic

Visual Basic 6.0 works and is supported under Vista. You need to run VB6 with administrative privileges. The rest of Visual Studio 6.0 is not supported. If you install in the following order everything works fine:

  1. VB6 from "Visual Basic 6.0, Enterprise Edition (English), Disc 1"
  2. Visual Studio 6.0 SP6 (it contains SP1-SP5 also)
  3. MSDN Collection only index and VB part
  4. Change VB6's Program Privilege Level to Run this program as an administrator

TortoiseSVN

TortoiseSVN.png

Note for x64 users: you can install both the 32 and 64-bit version side by side. This will enable the TortoiseSVN features also for 32-bit applications.

Sandisk Cruzer micro 2.0GB U3 USB key

Works after upgrading it. When you insert it the first time, it says it can't run, but there is an upgrade available. You need to start Internet explorer with "Run as administrator" to upgrade the dongle. When you get to the install page, cupy the url and paste in in a new Internet explorer that is started with "Run as administrator".

Nokia PC Suite 6.84

Works fine. Notice that you should make connections to Bluetooth phones from the PC Suite and not from Windows Bluetooth manager. If the connection is made from the blutooth manager first, remove it and add it again with the PC Suite.

Hardware that works fine

hp deskjet 990cxi

Windows Vista has a built in driver "hp deskjet 990c" for this printer.

R-Driver III USB 2.0 to SATA IDE cable

Connect any Serial ATA / Serial ATA II / IDE HardDisk to your USB 2.0 Port Uses Windows Vista's built in drivers for USB disks.

Hardware that doesn't work

Moschip USB to RS-232

It is possible to get a Vista x64 bit driver from here: http://www.moschip.com/html/download_drivers.html. The 64-bit version of Windows Vista is the first version of Windows that will only allow signed drivers and this restriction is built-in.

MCS77XX drivers are unsigned and therefore you need to press F8 during boot and get into “Advanced Boot Options” and select “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement” every time you want to install or use the MSC77XX device.

I will consider this as NOT WORKING!

M-Audio Transit USB Hi-Resolution Mobile Audio

M-Audio can not be installed on Vista x64.

M-Audio has a beta Vista driver for Transit, but it is only 32 bit.

They don't say anything about 64-bit support in the future. If you search google for user experiencies with M-Audio's 32-bit driver on Vista 32-bit it doesn't look very promising.

CANcardXL from Vector

I can't find a driver for that. They have a Vista 32 bit driver but if you use that you need to disable UAC!

CANister from Vector

You can install the software, but you cant run it because it only works with the old version of Aladdin's HARDLOCK driver, and that driver does not work with Vista. Alladdin has updated their driver also to Vista x64, but applications need to be recompiled to use the new driver.

Software that doesn't work

NetStumbler

You can install it, but it can't connect to your network adaptor]

F-Secure

F-Secure Antivis DOES NOT WORK AT ALL.

Lavasoft AdAware

You can install it, but if you start a scan, it will never finish. They don't officially suppert Vista and 64 bit.

To be tried later

VPN Clients

Installing x64 (additional drivers) for shared x86 print server on 2003 Server x86 sp2 or XP x86 sp2

  1. On the x64 machine, from Start > Run, type \\servername, where servername = the name of the x86 print server.
  2. In the list of shares, open the Printers folder.
  3. Right-click in the Printers folder and select Server Properties.
  4. Go to the Sharing tab and select Additional Drives.
  5. Check the X64 processor.
  6. If the printer is supported as standard from Windows Vista the driver will install automatically. Otherwise select the location of the OEM driver.

This works fine for a "hp deskjet 990cxi" it uses Windows built in driver for "hp deskjet 990c"
